Loton Park

Our final visit of 2014 was to Loton Park, the ancestral home of the Leighton family for over 300 years.  It is a magnificent 17th century country mansion in Alberbury on the upper reaches of the River Severn close to the Welsh border.  We were lead and entertained by the current owner, Sir Michael Leighton.

Walcot Hall

Our second visit of 2014 was to Walcot Hall in South Shropshire near to the village of Lydbury North.  Another well attended event, the tour was guided by our member Dr Nick Howell.  There has been a house at Walcot for 500 years or more.  Home of Lord Clive from 1763, it remained within the Clive family for nearly 200 years.

Annual Lecture 2013

Time Team Traveller

Matthew Williams, a professional archaeologist known to us all from Time Team gave this year’s Annual Lecture. He has been associated with the programme which is presented by Tony Robinson, since 2002. Employed as a trench supervisor, he took part in various excavations ranging from Bronze Age to World War II sites and also took part in costumed re-enactments.

Matthew explained how the archaeology and the filming of the programme were put together. The filming was undertaken by three film crews on the days following a meeting of the archaeologists.

Behind the scenes, guides were used to show the general public around the site to explain and answer questions. There were also catering staff, security personnel and about 60 production staff involved with each programme.
